Cinema into the Real - Scoring Lazarist (Steven
Eastwood)
A specific film space will be constructed on the Lazarist festival site. When
passers-by enter that space, lighting and a range of looped film score moments
are triggered. Seering violins (think of 'Vertigo') might accompany a couple
embracing; brooding horns and percussion become a backdrop to a man who sits on
the steps... Audience members unwittingly become implicated in cinematic
incidents, or in a narrative frame. The piece draws attention to how we refer to
cinema in describing the events in our lives. It foregrounds how the everyday
can be viewed as a set of narrative exchanges and recollections, or as a series
of roles played out. Cinema then becomes a model for a real in which all is
performance and everywhere is a set.
JIGOKU
Jigoku (the Japanese term for hell) is an extreme, chaotic audio visual
soundtrack session created by East End London DJ Lovely Jon, whereby deep, dark
movie music is cut up alongside wild footage from weird and obscure exploitation
flicks in perfect timing. Originally starting life in the early 901s as a
celebration of strange cinema and a reaction against mellow chill out music in
the backrooms of raves (freaking out all the clubbers trying to relax or 'come
down') Jigoku has forged on, working alongside art/cinema pranksters OMSK in
pre-famous Hoxton and Italian soundtrack legend Alessandro Alessandroni for two
sell-out shows at London1s Institute of Contemporary Arts.
